As HR professionals we should absolutely celebrate everything that is human in an organisation. Central to this is our role in championing those essentially human skills and capabilities that can only be performed by people.

At the same time, it would be farcical to ignore the world we live in. One where the influence and impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation is growing daily.

As technology becomes a fundamental part of our lives it is vital we remind ourselves, and the organisations we work for, of the unique value of what it is to be human. Creating a divide between this and technology would be counterproductive.

Both can unequivocally operate in tandem. Furthermore, as HR professionals championing the human element in organisations, we should be at the forefront of all such technologies rather than sitting on the side-lines and condemning the incredible advancements that have taken place in the last 20 years. Not only do they enable us to deliver in a fail-proof and more efficient way, these technologies provide us with push-of-a-button access to intelligent information and analysis about how we do what we do. Ironically, you could argue that technology is in fact helping us become more educated and therefore more acutely aware of what makes us human and how to leverage this to achieve greater performance.

Our role as HR is to navigate through this sea of technology so we move in the right direction. We should provide guidance on where technology can be best served for the greater good of HR and the organisation as a whole. Not only that, we should embrace technology for its power in enhancing our performance as humans as well as continuing to champion what it is to be human in the workplace.
